Artà is a municipality in the north-east of the Spanish island of Mallorca which is part of the Balearics. The small town with the same name is centre of administration for the municipality and the region Llevant. Wikipedia
The small town of Artà is surrounded by the breathtaking countryside of the Northeast coast. Towering above the picturesque town and its cobbled streets is the mighty castle, the town's landmark and one of its most visited sights. The old town has experienced an amazing development over the last years. Many of the old town houses and palaces have been lovingly renovated. Nifty shops, trendy boutiques, restaurants and cafés have moved into the ground floor premises, attracting customers from all over the world. A pedestrian zone is crossing most of the old town, passing the Plaça de Conqueridor, a shady square, framed by cafés and restaurants. Here, below one of the grand trees, is the best spot to enjoy some ice cream or a cool glass of wine, watching the idlers and locals minding their business. Towards the end of the square is the market hall, which is a must visit on market days, and which is best followed by a pick nick afterwards: one of the stalls right at the entrance of the market is selling a roasted lemon chicken that is legendary and delicious! Tuesdays is market day, starting at 09:00 hrs and closing around 13:30 hrs, and attracting visitors from all over the island. The surroundings of Artà are hilly and a great area for hikers and cyclists, who ar looking for variety and demanding tours. Golf players are spoilt for choice! Within a radius of a few kilometres there are no less than 5 golf courses for the ambitious players! If you fancy a more relaxed lifestyle, you will enjoy the beaches, which are never far. Don't miss the Cala Torta beach! Though no longer a secret, it is well worth the visit. The journey alone is a stunner, with the most spectacular views of the hills and the sea. There are more beaches towards the East, for example in Cala Ratjada, in Canyamel and in the Cala Millor bay or the the West in Son Serra de Marina or Playa de Muro.
The property market in Artà and its surroundings is dominated by used property, historic town and village houses and upmarket country homes. In the town centre and in the alleys of the old town the offer varies: there are town houses, which are already renovated and ready to move in, but also houses which still need full renovation. Quite remarkable is the wide variety of tastefully renovated quality town houses, which are already waiting for their new owners. The most popular choice being houses with a beautiful backyard, pool and ideally a roof terrace with views of the old town. At the same time, the number of apartments for sale in the old town is rather small.
The area around Artà is more of a finca or country home market. The offer includes historic, renovated fincas, but also recently-built houses in a contemporary style and grand estates. The houses are in the countryside and if set on one of the hills, they offer fabulous views of Artà. Along the old country road from Artà to Son Servera, there are prime locations with distant sea views and mostly luxury homes. Old houses are mostly renovated with taste and attention to details. Building plots and fincas in need of renovation have become scarce. If you are looking for a good return on investment, you will find a well developed market for holiday rentals in this area, which is one of the most beautiful and popular parts of the island.
There are plenty of shopping facilities within the old town with supermarkets, pharmacies etc. always nearby. The pedestrian zone offers a wide choice of restaurants, cafés and boutiques. Dinner with "alta cocina" is served in the fine dining restaurant Gaudi y Zezo, which is part of the San Salvador hotel and which is cooking modern, Spanish cuisine (pre-reservation recommended!). Just at the beginning of the pedestrian zone is an Italian favourite: Vino e Cucina is maybe the best among the many Italian places. And for those looking for a local and very authentic experience, the Finca restaurant Es Serral, just outside of Artà would be an excellent choice.
Beaches:
Cala Torta and Cala Mitjana. The journey alone is spectacular. The beach bar is serving fresh fish every day and a unique atmosphere! Further beaches in this area are Cala Mesquida, Cala Angulla or the Canyamel beach.
